What You Can Practice in the Exercise Room
Many players experience performance anxiety during the fast-paced Charleston at live club or tournament tables. The Exercise Room provides four focused drill modules to sharpen your strategic instincts at your own pace:
1. Complete 6-Step Charleston Simulator
Play through the full official passing rotation with 3 intelligent bot players (Right, Across, Left, Left, Across, Right, and optional Courtesy Across). Observe how the bots prioritize hand clusters and adjust their passes dynamically.
2. Natural Pair Preservation & Anchor Drills
Practice identifying anchor pairs in 13 and 14-tile dealt hands. Learn why breaking a natural pair is a critical tactical error since Jokers can never substitute for pairs or singles on the NMJL card.
3. Blind Passing Decision Drills
Master the delicate art of the blind pass on the 3rd (First Left) and 6th (Last Right) passes. Learn when it is mathematically optimal to pass 1, 2, or 3 incoming tiles blindly without looking at them to protect your working hand.
4. Mid-Sequence Hand Pivot Scenarios
Drill scenarios where incoming passes deliver unexpected clusters (e.g. dealt an Even 2468 hand, but receiving consecutive 4-5-6 Craks from Across). Learn how to smoothly pivot toward higher-equity backup hands.
The 6 Charleston Steps Practiced in the Simulator
- 1st Pass (Right): Mandatory 3-tile pass to your right neighbor.
- 2nd Pass (Across): Mandatory 3-tile pass to the player opposite you.
- 3rd Pass (First Left): Mandatory 3-tile pass to your left (Blind passing 1-3 tiles allowed).
- 4th Pass (Second Left): Mandatory 3-tile pass to your left (Commencing 2nd Charleston if all players agree).
- 5th Pass (Across): Mandatory 3-tile pass across the table.
- 6th Pass (Last Right): Mandatory 3-tile pass to your right (Blind passing 1-3 tiles allowed).
- Optional Courtesy Across: Mutual agreement to pass 0, 1, 2, or 3 tiles with the player across from you.
